How We Heal: The Holistic Path to Lasting Wellness

by | Health Strategies

What is health, and how do we truly heal?

At Haven Holistic Health, we believe that every human body is intelligently designed to thrive. No matter where you are on your health journey or what challenges you’re facing, your body has an incredible capacity for healing—when given the right conditions.

Healing isn’t about fixing something that’s “broken.” It’s about realigning with nature and removing the imbalances that obstruct your body’s natural healing process.

In this blog, we’ll explore how healing works on a physical, mental, and emotional level. And, if you prefer to watch rather than read, check out this short video from Dr. Alex Orton, ND on “How We Heal”:

The Body’s Innate Ability to Heal

Our bodies are not fragile. They are dynamic, adaptive systems designed to maintain balance and vitality. When we experience symptoms—whether they manifest as fatigue, pain, or chronic illness—it’s not a sign of brokenness.

It’s a message.

These symptoms indicate that toxemia—or a buildup of toxins—has disrupted the body’s natural equilibrium. Toxemia can take many forms, and understanding these imbalances is the first step toward genuine healing.

What Is Toxemia?

Toxemia refers to an accumulation of toxins—whether physical, mental, or emotional—that impairs the body’s normal functions. Let’s break it down into its two core categories:

1. Physical Toxemia

Physical toxemia results from an overload of environmental and metabolic toxins. These toxins must be eliminated through the body’s natural detoxification pathways, including:

  • Stool: Removing waste from the digestive system
  • Urine: Filtering toxins through the kidneys
  • Sweat: Releasing toxins through the skin
  • Breath: Exhaling carbon dioxide and other volatile compounds

When these detoxification pathways become overwhelmed—due to poor diet, environmental pollutants, or chronic stress—toxins accumulate, and symptoms arise.

Examples of Physical Toxemia:

  • Digestive issues (bloating, constipation)
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Skin problems (acne, eczema)
  • Hormonal imbalances

2. Mental & Emotional Toxemia

The mind and body are deeply interconnected. Mental and emotional toxemia refers to unprocessed emotions, limiting beliefs, and chronic mental stress that impair the nervous system’s ability to regulate healing.

Repressed emotions like anger, grief, and fear create energetic blockages, preventing the body’s natural healing processes from running smoothly.

Signs of Emotional Toxemia:

  • Persistent anxiety or irritability
  • Feelings of hopelessness or burnout
  • Recurring negative thought patterns
  • Trouble sleeping or relaxing

Healing on an emotional level often requires self-awareness, emotional release techniques, and inner work to clear these blockages.

The Healing Process: A Natural, Non-Linear Journey

Healing is not a straight line. It’s a dance of ups and downs, progress and plateaus. Just as nature moves in cycles—seasons changing, tides shifting—our bodies also follow natural rhythms.

The key is to avoid chasing perfection. Instead, focus on consistent, intentional actions that move you toward health.

Here are three core principles that guide our healing philosophy:

1. Alignment with Nature

  • Spend time outdoors to reconnect with the earth’s natural rhythms.
  • Follow circadian-friendly routines like morning sunlight exposure and evening light reduction.
  • Eat whole, nutrient-dense foods that support your metabolism.

2. Detoxification and Rejuvenation

  • Support your body’s detox pathways with practices like sauna sessions, dry brushing, and deep breathing.
  • Stay hydrated with structured water to enhance cellular detoxification.
  • Incorporate foods rich in antioxidants and fiber to bind and eliminate toxins naturally.

3. Emotional Resilience and Mindset Shifts

  • Practice mindfulness and meditation to reduce mental clutter.
  • Identify and challenge limiting beliefs that may sabotage your healing process.
  • Surround yourself with a supportive, health-conscious community to stay inspired.

Healing Requires Patience, Curiosity, and Trust

Our bodies have an innate wisdom that knows how to heal. However, we must provide the right environment for this process to unfold. Healing isn’t about fighting symptoms—it’s about understanding their root cause and creating a life that aligns with natural principles.

Practical Steps to Begin Your Healing Journey

Ready to start healing naturally? Here are a few steps you can implement today:

  • Track Your Basal Body Temperature: A low waking temperature often indicates metabolic dysfunction.
  • Practice Deep, Rhythmic Breathing: The breath is a powerful detox tool.
  • Prioritize Rest and Sleep Hygiene: Healing requires deep, restorative sleep. (Check out our guide on Sleep Hygiene for practical tips!)
  • Eat Whole, Nutrient-Dense Foods: Include foods rich in minerals like magnesium, selenium, and iodine.

Most importantly, give yourself grace. Healing is a journey, not a destination.
